Tropical Storm Isaias, on August 4, 2020, was Con Edison’s second-largest storm outage, with 260,000 customers out across its system. A day later, 95,054 Con Ed customers and 28,734 NYSEG customers in Westchester were still without power. Only Hurricane Sandy was bigger, with a record 1.1 million Con Ed customers out and about 12,000 in White Plains alone. Water is the other risk. During Ida in 2021, the Mamaroneck and Sheldrake rivers and Blind Brook flooded parts of Mamaroneck and Rye’s Indian Village.
Con Edison is the gas utility for most of Westchester. Older county planning data showed North Salem, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge and parts of Bedford and Yorktown outside Con Ed’s gas service, so we confirm gas service and capacity at every site visit and install propane where gas isn’t available. There is no county permit office, so permits go through each city, town or village building department, and electrical inspectors working in the county must hold a Westchester license. Our project managers handle the permits and inspections.
