How hard a storm hits depends on where you live in the county. In the March 2018 nor’easter, 86% of Eversource customers in Deep River, 75% in Haddam and 70% in both East Haddam and East Hampton were without power by 7 p.m., along with 1,711 households in Chester and 2,163 customers in Killingworth. Clinton was at 24% and Old Saybrook at 21%. Middletown and Cromwell, by contrast, were barely affected. A standby generator protects you no matter which side of that divide your home is on.
Gas service varies town by town in Middlesex County. Connecticut’s utility regulator lists Connecticut Natural Gas for East Hampton and Portland, Yankee Gas for Cromwell and Middletown, and Southern Connecticut Gas for Clinton, Essex, Old Saybrook and Westbrook. Haddam shows no gas company, and Chester is not listed. In every town we confirm gas availability at the site visit and install propane where it isn’t available. Connecticut has no county government, so permits are issued by each town’s building department, and our project managers handle the filing and inspections.
