Get Your Generator Ready For Winter Storms

The forecast is calling for heavy snow and high winds, make sure your generator is ready. Severe weather is the leading cause of power outages in the Northeast. Between the aging power grid, extreme cold, heavy snow, and ice, outages can last longer and hit harder than they have in the past. When electricity goes out during a winter storm, homes can become unsafe fast.

Winter Storms Put Extra Stress on the Power Grid

Extreme cold alone can cause widespread outages. Frozen equipment, higher energy demand, and damaged lines all increase the chance of losing power. The risk for an outage grows when snow and ice get added to the mix. Heavy accumulation on power lines and tree branches hanging over those lines have been known to knock out power for long periods of time.

When grid power fails, your generator becomes your main source of protection – keeping your home warm, pipes protected, food preserved, and devices (including life-saving medical devices) powered.

Clear Access To Your Generator Before the Storm

For your generator to work properly during a storm, it needs airflow and easy access.

  • Clear snow, ice, leaves, and debris from around the base of your generator
  • Maintain at least 3 feet of clear space on all sides
  • Make sure the enclosure does not have sticks, dirt or buildup in it

When snow falls, shovel a path to and around your generator. This ensures proper ventilation for the unit and allows techs to reach it if service is needed during or after the storm.

Run Your Generator Before You Need It

A generator sitting in the cold that hasn’t run recently may struggle to start.
To get ready for a storm, run your generator for about 10 minutes. This keeps the internal parts lubricated and makes sure your system is ready to go if an outage hits.

Check Oil Levels

Before cold, ice, and snow move in, take a few minutes to confirm your generator has oil in it. If your generator has already run this season and has not been inspected, it likely will need to be topped off with oil. If you have questions on how to do this, give us a call: 1-800-972-4264
